The city began as the capital of the Medang Kingdom sometime before 732 AD, then called "Mataram," and for centuries went through a flourishing golden age as a center of Javanese Hindu-Buddhist culture.
Today, Yogyakarta is known for its historic temples and ruins, sophistication, beaches, fine arts, ballet, classical culture, puppet shows, drama and theater, music, palace, Dutch inhabitants, and blend of Buddhist and Hindu religous heritage.
