Yangon, formerly and at times colloquially known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar, located at the meeting point of the Yangon and Bago Rivers, and 19 miles off the coast of the Gulf of Martaban. It served as the capital of Myanmar, or Burma, until 2006.

Yangon was originally founded as a small fishing village, then called "Dagon," around 1028. It remained a tiny town until it captured the interest of Burmese king Alaungpaya, who recognized its advantageous geographical location. He conquered the town in 1755, and immediately began transforming it into a powerful city. He renamed the city Yangon, which means "End of Strife." The more commonly known name of Rangoon is actually simple a case of mis-pronunciation by the British, who briefly took over the city in 1824.

Today, Yangon is known for its rich culture, history, religious establishments and temples, mix of colonial European and Asian architecture, outdoor markets, and predominant love of tea, teatime, and teahouses.
