Most of the city of today is newer, with the majority of the architecture dating back to the 20th Century. A town existed here beginning around the 18th Century, however. The city was formerly called "Barmen-Elberfeld," but this was changed to the current name in order to allude to its location in the Wupper Valley.
Today, Wupperfeld is known for its suspension railway of trolley cars that run throughout the city, and for its modern church and many parks and woodlands.
