John Oxley discovered the area in 1817, and named it in honor of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. A steady township was not established until 1823, however, as an agricultural community.
Today, Wellington is known still for its agriculture, particularly for its alfalfa, as well as for livestock.
