It was founded in 1147 as Trinity Monastery - though the question of whether a town formed around this monastery is much debated, as this date would make Vologda as old as Moscow. It is generally accepted that the actual town was established in 1264.
Today, Vologda is known for being far from other large cities, for its transporation, churches and cathedrals, historic architecture, and harsh weather and snow.
