Versailles is a town in northern Kentucky, located 13 miles west of Lexington in the state's famous Bluegrass Region.

It was settled in 1792, as an 80 acre estate farm. It was named after Versailles, France in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a family friend. However, the landowner did not know how to correctly pronounce the name of the French city, and the Kentucky version was said as "Verr-say-ll-s," a pronunciation it still retains today.

In modern times, Versailles is known for its enormous mansions, pasture lands, and horse farms, particularly of Thoroughbred racehorses.
