Urumqi is the capitol of the Xinjiang region of northwestern China. Its name means "beautiful pasture," inspired by the rolling, mountain-valley landscape of lush green fields surrounding the city.

It was established in 648 AD, as a town in which to provide a government seat and control over the Silk Road industry, specifically to collect taxes from silk and other merchant caravans. It was a major point on the Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty.

Today, Urumqi is known for its transport, economy, and surrounding countryside.
