The first settlement here was in 1887, when a single post office was built. The name of the town was originally Tule, but a clerical error led to it being spelled "Tulia," a name that was kept. When the railroad line from Santa Fe connected to Tulia in 1906, it experienced a boom in economy, but this died down after the railroads became less popular.
Today, Tulia is known mainly for its agriculture and farming.
