Tarsus in People's Lives
Julius Caesar: I visited this city in May of 47 BC, while on my way to Amasya. Here, I was celebrated and welcomed with enthusiastic support. However, underneath the cheers lay an assassination plot, and a planned attempt to kill me, though it was never carried out.
Marc Antony: While ruling over the Greek colonies of the Roman Empire, which at the time included Egypt, I decided that I needed to secure my diplomatic relationship with that country's queen, Cleopatra. I asked her to meet me in this city in 41 BC, and traveled here from Ephesus. I did not know, at the time, that my life was about to change dramatically. Cleopatra invited me onto one of her luxurious royal barges, where we had a diplomatic banquet. I had met her years ago as a 14 year old girl, and even then had been struck by her. Now, I was fascinated. While in this city, I fell in love, and became a character in one of the greatest love stories of all time. Shortly afterward, I sailed back to Alexandria with Cleopatra.
