It was founded in approximately 1221 as "La Strode," which was actually the name of the marsh that the town formed around. Population grew once a church was built here in 1279, but Stroud is best historically known for its role in the Industrial Revolution, when it was a bustling center for wool, cloth-making, and mills.
Today, Stroud is notable for its proximity to the Cotswolds, valley location, rolling landscape resulting in steep streets and houses built on hills, free thinking, and cafes.
