One of the oldest cities in Europe, evidence of human inhabitation found here dates back to 5000 BC. Though little is known about the original settlement, it is known that when the Romans conquered it in the 1st Century BC, it was already a well established town. It soon became a powerful Roman city, then known as "Sirmium," and was capital of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy. Ten Roman Emperors were born in or near to this city.
Today, Sremska Mitrovica is known for its history, archaeology, architecture, culture, and riverfront.

Mirjana Puhar: I was born here in 1995, when this city was still part of Yugoslavia. Though I was born here, I did not retain much of a connection with this city or my European culture and background. Due to political strife after the Kosovo War, my family left this city, and this country, behind in 2000, when I was 5 years old. We moved as refugees to New York.
