The land was originally inhabited by the Shinnecock Indians, until the land was purchased from them by settlers coming from Lynn, Massachusetts in 1640, after which it became a tiny colony of a handful of families. It was named after Southampton, England.
Today, Southampton is known for its relaxed charm, Hamptons-esque beauty, beaches, boutique shops, downtown area, expensive mansions and beach houses, and equestrian gatherings.
