Hilaire Belloc: My family moved here when I was less than a year old, in 1870, to escape rising political tensions back in my birth country of France. I loved this place, and grew up here. I always considered it to be my true home, and was often fiercely homesick for it later in life, writing much poetry about it. In 1872, my father's wealth was wiped out by the stock market crash, and he died a few months later. I was sent to school in Birmingham at the age of 11, in 1881.
