People Born in Shanagarry
Shanagarry in People's Lives
William Penn: My family owned an estate here, and in 1657, we moved here, partially because my father had recently completed a failed voyage and was not in the best financial situation, and partially due to political tension created by disagreeing with the policies and rule of Oliver Cromwell. Here, I peacefully grew an interest in gardening and horticulture, and met a Quaker missionary. I was immediately drawn to his teaching of a simplistic, quiet way of life, and would later become a devout, lifelong Quaker. My family moved back to England a year later in 1658, upon hearing that Cromwell had died.
