Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia & Herzegovina, also the capital of the Federation of Bosnia and of the Herzegovina Entity. It is located in the Sarajevo Valley in the Dinaric Alps, along the Miljacka River in the Balkans. It is at times referred to by the nickname "Jerusalem of Europe," drawing comparison to the Israeli city due to its long history of mixed religious symbolism.

The city was originally inhabited by the Illyrians in ancient times, and came under Roman rule in 9 AD. It rose to promince as an Ottoman citadel in the 15th Century. From 1992 - 1996, the city suffered from the longest siege in the history of modern warfare, during the Bosnian War.

Today, Sarajevo is known for its tragic history, efforts to rebuild itself, blend of religions, political and religious controversy and unrest, quintessentially European city structure, architecture, cathedral, mosques, synogogues, economy, beauty, and international influence.

Magnus Carlsen: I traveled here in 2006 to compete in the International Bosna Chess Tournament, which I placed first in, though I shared first place with two other players. This was my first win in an A class elite tournament.
