Gore Vidal: I lived here for much of my life, and bought a lovely villa here around 1972. It was a luxurious, grand house named "La Rondinaia," meaning "the swallow's nest." Set high up on the hillside overlooking the town and the sea, I called it my "perch," and I loved writing here and being a part of the Italian way of life. I acted much like a king presiding over his court here, a position that I quite enjoyed. I lived with my male partner, Howard, and no one could tell me not to. I was, by far, the star of this small town, a glamorous prince among commoners. The locals treated me with respect and awe. I recieved many famous guests, including Jacqueline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, Princess Margaret, Lauren Bacall, Johnny Carson, Mick Jagger, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Sting, Trudy Styler, Leonard Bernstein, and Rudolph Nureyev. In 2003, however, my life changed forever when my beloved partner Howard passed away. We had been an inseperable couple since 1950, and his death ended our 53 year relationship. I was devastated, and mourned him for the rest of my life. I was never the same anymore, without him. I moved back to the United States in 2005, in failing health, sadly selling my villa.
