A planned city, the land was chosen as a location to build the future state capital in 1788, and in 1792, the existing city was officially named such. It was named in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh.
Today, Raleigh is known for its fast rate of growth, city skyline, university, numerous venues for performing arts, music scene, museums, technology, and abundance of oak trees within the city limits.
