It began in the medieval times, during which time it was a town in the Amalfi Republic. It experienced a golden age of wealth and enlightenment in the 16th and 17th Centuries, but by the 1850's had fallen into decline, with a dwindling population, now reduced to a mere fishing village. It was revitalized, however, in 1953, when John Steinbeck wrote an essay praising the town.
Today, Positano is known as one of the most beautiful gems of Italy, renowned for its situation built into a hillside, cliff views, beaches and oceanside, sunrises and sunsets, history, architecture, signature alcohol, and romantic charm.
