It was established in 1877 as a gold mining town, and grew rapidly in size to one of the largest towns in the region. However, a disastrous hurricane in 1911 wiped out all but 2 of the settlement's buildings, and population never recovered. Today, there are approximately 3,200 inhabitants.
Port Douglas is now known for its beaches, surrounding forests, tropical allure, shopping, and resorts.

Isabel Lucas: While visiting here in 2002, at the age of 17, I was discovered, and appraoched by a talent agent while sitting underneath a mango tree in this town's market. She asked if I would be interested in modeling, which did not hold much allure for me. She then suggested acting, and I agreed to take acting classes and go to an agency. It was the beginning of a successful acting career.
Jared Leto: I traveled here in 1997 to film scenes of the movie The Thin Red Line.
