Port-au-Prince is the capitol and largest city in Haiti, located on the Gulf of Gonave, with a population of approximately 3.7 million.

It was settled in approximately 2600 BC by settlers from Venezuela making the voyage in canoes. A major earthquake in 2010 destroyed much of the city.

Port-au-Prince in People's Lives

Brooklyn Decker: I traveled here in 2014 to help with a scholarship fundraiser. I met a fellow UNC fan, planted gardens, went hiking in the Furcy mountains, and talked and helped out local students. I called the trip a "life highlight" and cried when it was time to fly back home.

Charles Hector d'Estaing: I lived here from 1764 - 1767 as Governor of the Leeward Islands. Attempts to recruit settlers and enrich the land through trading and agriculture largely failed, and I longed for the thrills of my former military life charging into battle, stealing ships, and chases through the jungle.

Jared Leto: I spent a year here in my childhood, when I was 12 years old, in 1983. The time I spent here impacted me deeply, and I saw poverty as I had never seen before. The experience was "unforgettable" and deeply moving. I was always eager to return later in life. I did so in January of 2011, hoping to reconnect with this country and provide aid after the earthquakes that had struck a year earlier. I took photographs while here that I later made into a book, the proceeds of which went to relief work. I also hosted a charity benefit in New York to raise funds for rebuilding this city.

Madalina Ghenea: I visited here in 2015. I love Haiti, and sometimes even refer to it on social media sites as "my home," puzzling many fans, as I have only spent a few months here collectively.
