Pittsburgh view-from-incline sm
Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania, the second-largest in the state.

The area was first "discovered" by French explorer Robert de la Salle in 1669, and settled in 1717 by Dutch pioneers. It officially became a city in 1758, and was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham by General John Forbes.

Today, Pittsburgh is known as one of America's most livable cities, for its strong economy - particularly in the steel industry, and its many bridges.

Pittsburgh in People's Lives

Albert Gallatin: I built a lovely, rambling farmhouse just outside this city, and moved here in 1784. I named it "Friendship Hill" in honor of my friend's support. Though I loved the property and said that I would "be contented to live and die" here, I was forced to sell it in 1821 for far less than I had spent building it.

Hanna Merjos: I traveled here in 2015.

Jake Gyllenhaal: I traveled here in 2009 to film the movie Love & Other Drugs.

Liam Neeson: I traveled here in 2009 to film scenes of the movie The Next Three Days

Sienna Miller: I traveled here in 2007 to film scenes of the movie The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.

Taylor Lautner: I traveled here in 2010 to film scenes of the movie Abduction.

Viggo Mortensen: I traveled here in 2008 to film scenes for the movie The Road.
