The area was first "discovered" by French explorer Robert de la Salle in 1669, and settled in 1717 by Dutch pioneers. It officially became a city in 1758, and was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham by General John Forbes.
Today, Pittsburgh is known as one of America's most livable cities, for its strong economy - particularly in the steel industry, and its many bridges.
