Oswiecim is a town in southwestern Poland, located 31 miles west of Krakow, the location of the former World War II concentration camp Auschwitz.

It was founded sometime before 1138 and has a rich Polish history.

Today, the town is best known as the location of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, which preserves the tragedy of the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz, the deadliest of all camps of its kind.

Ralph Fiennes: I traveled here in 1992 to film scenes of the movie Schindler's List. My dark role in the movie, as an evil Nazi commander, had a profoundly disturbing effect on me, and nowhere did I feel this more than when I was at Auschwitz.
