John Shortland was the first European to set foot on this land, in 1797, while searching for rebel convicts. Recognizing the advantageous location on the river, he encouraged the founding of a settlement here, and by 1799, Newcastle had become a major exporter of coal.
Today, Newcastle is known for its maritime industry, river and bay views, and beaches.
