New Salem is a re-created 19th Century frontier town, located in central Illinois.

It was founded around a gristmill in 1828 but, over the next few decades, became uninhabited. It was re-built as a historical reproduction during the Great Depression.

Abraham Lincoln: I set out from home for the first time in 1830, at age 22, and settled here, where I worked as a shopkeeper and came to own a general store. It was here that I developed a budding interest in politics. I lived here until about 1836.
