The town was established around the early 17th Century, then known as "Charles Town," but was destroyed by the Spanish in 1684, when it was completely burnt to the ground. It was rebuilt by the Dutch in 1695, and named after Nassau, Germany.
Today, Nassau is known as a highly desirable vacation, resort, and cruise destination, drawing in tourists from all over the world. It is renowned for its beautiful white sand beaches, clear Caribbean waters, luxurious hotels, harbor, maritime activities, colonial architecture, breezy downtown area, and pirate history.
