Montpellier is the capital city of the department of Herault in southern France. It is the 8th largest French city, and the fastest growing French city of the past 25 years. It is the third-largest French city on the Mediterranean coastline. It is one of the few cities in France without any Roman or Greek foundation or heritage.
The city was founded after the another nearby town, then the largest in the area, was found to be overly vulnerable to pirate raids. It was founded around 985.
Today, Montpellier is known for its architecture, gardens, outdoor cafes, shopping, beaches, history, beauty, and as the location of the University of Montpellier.
