Hunter S. Thompson: I moved here in 1959, and accepted a job as a reporter for the small local paper the Times Herald Record. At the time, I was 22 years old and had recently been fired from a job as a copy boy at Times Magazine. I was also trying to focus on my writing, and pondering fiction. My job at the paper in this town did not last for very long, as my fiery and abrasive personality yet again went too far. Less than a year after being hired, I got into an argument with the owner of a local restaurant - who happened to be an advertiser of the paper, and friendly with the owner. I also damaged the office candy machine while being reckless and destructive. I was fired, and moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1960.
