Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee, located on the Mississippi River in the southwestern corner of the state, close or bordering the state lines of Arkansas and Mississippi.

The land originally belonged to the Chicksaw Indians. The first European exploration here was in the 16th Century, by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. A Spanish fort was built on the land in 1795, but was later abandoned. In 1797, American settlement took place nearby, though this was by chance, and they were not aware of the fort's ruins, located a few miles away. The city of Memphis was officially founded in 1819 by James Winchester and Andrew Jackson. It was named after the Ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, Egypt. The Spanish fort was still unnoticed.

Today, Memphis is known for its Southern appeal, downtown area, skyline, iconic bridge, riverfront, history, religious culture, history, parks, and American music heritage.
