It was established as the Roman fort "Trimontium," and later grew around Melrose Abbey, which was established around 651 but later completely rebuilt in 1136 by David I of Scotland.
Today, Melrose is known as the location of Melrose Abbey, considered one of the most beautiful sites of church or monastery ruins in the world. It is also known as the location of Abbotsford House, and for its surrounding Eildon Hills, where King Arthur is supposedly buried.
