It was founded in 1795, and swelled in population after becoming a coal mining town in 1830, reaching its peak in the 1940's as a steel mining industry. When both of these economies moved on, the town's population and general wealth lessened as well.
Today, it is known for its industrial history and as the opening location of the first G.C. Murphy store, which was popular in the early to mid 1900's as a dime supermarket.
