Connections

Washington began courting George Washington in 1758, while also being courted by another Virginia planter who was far wealthier. Martha and George married in 1759, both at the age of 27. They had a happy marriage together, and army officials frequently commented on how in love they were.

Washington was an acquaintance of the Marquis de Lafayette, who commented on how "madly" she loved her husband.

Charles Willson Peale painted a miniature portrait of Washington, for which he charged "the usual 56 dollars." Her portrait was also painted by Gilbert Stuart.

One of Washington's personal slaves, Oney Judge, ran away and escaped to New Hampshire in 1796, which greatly upset Washington.

Washington was a friend of Abigail Adams, who frequently called on her at Mount Vernon.
