Connections

Llosa was a former friend of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and wrote his doctoral thesis at the Complutense University of Madrid about Marquez, in 1959. However, the two did not speak or see each other for years, until seeing each other in Mexico City in 1976, where Llosa punched Marquez in the face. After this, Marquez was photographed with a black eye, and the photo was later published in Times magazine, sparking a public interest in the feud between the two writers. However, neither ever commented or shed any light on the reasons behind their falling out. In 2007, Llosa agreed to allow a part of his book to be included as the introduction to Marquez's 40th anniversary edition of One Hundred Years of Solitude

Llosa was asked by Fernando Belaunde Terry, then the President of Peru, to join the government Investigatory Commisson in 1983. After joining, I was a part of the investigation of the murders of eight journalists at the hands of villagers in a small town. In 1988, he entered a political coalition with Terry.

As a young man, Llosa was initially an admirer of Fidel Castro, but later took a stand against him. When Castro imprisoned a writer in 1971, Llosa personally wrote the Cuban dictator a letter requesting that the man be released.

Octavio Paz is a friend of Llosa's.

Llosa is a supporter of Alejandro Toledo, and publically stated that he was voting his him when Toledo ran for office as President of Peru in 2011.
