Much archaeological evidence has been found to prove that Mantua has been continuously inhabited since about 2000 BC. It was an Estruscan village in the 6th Century BC, and is named after the Estruscan god Mantus. It later became a Roman town, and later a key city of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, especially in terms of the arts.
Today, Mantua is known as one of the most romantic places in the world - it is where part of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is set. It is also renowned for its music, poetry, lakefronts, history, architecture, shopping, opera heritage, downtown area, and beauty.

Mantua in People's Lives
Hailee Steinfeld: I traveled here in 2012 to film scenes of the movie Romeo & Juliet.
Napoleon Bonaparte: I commanded a siege on this city in 1796. The fortress and the city were strong, and had recieved reinforcements before my army arrived, and so the battle dragged on. The opposing Austrian general was Dagobert Sigmund von Wurmser. I had to temporarily leave the siege to fight two battles elsewhere, but after that returned with relief. The siege ended up going on for 7 months before we conquered the city, at great price.
