The land was originally inhabited by the Navajo and Apache Indians. The first European settlement here was in 1917, when a ranch school was established here. In 1942, the Department of War, hunting for a remote location to house the secret Manhattan Project, bought the school and founded their own sort of town of scientists and government officials.
Today, Los Alamos is best known for its history in the Manhattan Project and the atomic bomb, Native American Heritage, and its natural surroundings such as canyons, extinct volcanoes, and mountains.
