Long Beach is a coastal city in southern California, the 7th-largest in the state and the 36th-largest in the United States. It is about 22 miles south of Los Angeles.

The first Europeans in the area were Spanish explorers in the 15th Century, but habitation by Europeans did not begin until 1784, when two large areas of land, ranchos, were established under the ownership of favored Spanish soldiers. Long Beach was not officially founded, however, until 1897.

Today, Long Beach is known for its beaches, skyscrapers and skyline, ferris wheel, tourist attractions and activities, and proximity to Los Angeles.
