The first Europeans in the area were Spanish explorers in the 15th Century, but habitation by Europeans did not begin until 1784, when two large areas of land, ranchos, were established under the ownership of favored Spanish soldiers. Long Beach was not officially founded, however, until 1897.
Today, Long Beach is known for its beaches, skyscrapers and skyline, ferris wheel, tourist attractions and activities, and proximity to Los Angeles.
