Leipzig is a city in the state of Saxony in western Germany. It is the 12th largest city in Germany.

Its first mention in history was in 1015, and officially became a city in 1165. It became an important medeival trade city, and afterward rose to become of the most prosperous, influential German cities, especially in areas such as music and the arts. After World War II, the city fell into a short decline or dip, however.

Today, Leipzig is known for its nickname - "hypezig" or "hip city," its history, opera, and for having one of the most advanced and modern zoos in Europe.
