It was the Hawaiian royal capital until the 1800's, and its exact date of first settlement is unknown - though thought to be by Polynesian settlers around the 6th Century AD.
Today, Lahaina is a gateway to other tourist towns, and also a busy vacation destination itself, going from approximately 12,000 in population to 50,000 in tourist season. It is known for its beautiful beaches, resorts and hotels, ancient banyan trees, oceanside villas, whale watching, and annual Halloween celebrations.
