It was originally an early medieval Pictish settlement. Notably, it was the scene of accused witches in the 16th Century, and to this day, many older buildings and houses dating back to that period have a "witches stane," thought to ward off witchcraft.
Today, Kirriemuir is known for its quaint and small downtown area, history, and Peter Pan statue.
