Originally inhabited by Creek Native American tribes, the first European contact with the island was by the Spanish in 1510, who named it "Isla de Ballenas," which translates to "island of whales." In 1562, explorer Jean Ribault claimed the island for France, and it was renamed "Ille de la Somme." The French, however, were quickly massacred by the Spanish, who afterward began a colony on the island.
Today, Jekyll Island is recognized as a beautiful and luxurious getaway, renowned for its island beauty, colorful sunrises, beaches, golfing, resorts and spas, vacation villas, marshes, wildlife, and water park.
