It was first settled in the 1850's, and was originally named "Mesquiteville." It was given its current name in 1858, in honor of two brothers who had been veterans in the Texas Revolution. Before the Civil War, the town was among the few in Texas that voted against secession. The town was frequently attacked, with tragic results, by Native Americans, until a fort was built here in 1870. After the town gathered a reputation as being more safe, it grew into a prosperous and busy area.
Today, Jacksboro is known for its southern small-town atmosphere and its 4H club.
