Ithaca Commons, Ithaca (New York)
Ithaca is a town in central New York, located on Cayuga Lake. It is primarily known as a college town, as the location of Cornell University and two other smaller colleges.

Before European settlement, the land was inhabited by the Cayuga Iroquois Indians. In 1791, land here was distributed to soldiers of the Revolutionary War, and civilization began. It was named at the Greek island of Ithaca.

Today, it is primarily known for its universities, downtown area, colorful autumns, natural beauty, lake, and refined intellectuality.

Pearl S. Buck: While my husband and I visited the United States briefly in 1924, I earned my master's degree here at Cornell University. I visited this town again in 1930, with my husband and daughter Janice. While staying here, I was invited to speak at the Astor Hotel in New York, and gladly accepted.
