Isabella Beeton by Julia Margaret Cameron, 1865
Isabella Beeton was one of the first cookbook authors, highly acclaimed during her time as the author of Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management. She later earned controversy when it was discovered that many portions of her book had been taken word for word from previous authors on similar topics, including Eliza Acton. Beeton, however, defended herself saying that she had never claimed the work to be exclusively original, but rather a convenient manual for women.
