Koch met Karl Otto Koch in 1934, while both were young members of the rising Nazi Party. She was 28 at the time. Two years later, the couple married. The bond in their relationship seemed to have been their shared sadism, though Karl was more interested in men than in Ilse. Because of this, they had an open marriage, and Ilse, who was known to be promiscuous, was allowed to sleep with other men. Karl was allowed to do the same with other men. Both of them were later reported to have forced themselves on male prisoners at Buchenwald.
