The first civilization here was a Benedictine abbey, built in 620 AD. The main feature, the grand Herrenchiemsee Palace, was built for Ludwig II of Bavarai from 1878 - 1885. Work stopped after the king died in an accident, and was opened to the public. One of the most ostentatious palaces in the world, the enormous amount of gold contained inside alone is worth an estimated $251 million.
Today, Herrenchiemsee draws tourists from around the world to see its palace, for which it is known.
