Heraklion's rich ancient history dates back to approximately 2000 BC. Known as Knossos, it was the capital and crown city of the Minoan Empire. Ruins of the palace of Knossos remain intact and a major tourist attraction. The city was abandoned by the Minoans around 1100 BC, and taken over and re-established by the Saracens in 824 AD.
Today, Heraklion is known for its history, ancient ruins, beaches, maritime industry, sailing, warm Meditteranean climate, cuisine, and Cretan beauty.
