An ancient city, Haifa began as a small port called "Tell Abu Hawam" around the 14th Century BC. Due to its advantageous coastline position and natural wealth of resources, Haifa has been a much-desired city throughout history, and has been conquered and re-conquered dozens of times. At different points, it has been ruled by the Phoenicians, Persians, Hasmoneans, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders, Ottomans, British, and the Israelis.
Today, Haifa is known for being one of the jewels of Israel, and one of the country's most beautiful cities. It is recognized for its seaport, shrines, gardens, university and education, wealth, economy, and oil.

Haifa in People's Lives
Liam Neeson: I traveled here in 1985 to film scenes of the movie The Delta Force. We filmed on the beach.
Napoleon Bonaparte: While marching to take Acre in 1799, my armies and I stopped here and took this city, mainly in order to take its supplies and provisions. After stripping the city of its resources, we moved onward.
Roald Dahl: I was based here with the Royal Air Force in 1941, after my squadron was forced to evacuate Athens under the threat of Nazi invasion. For four weeks, I flew daily and got into a number of air skirmishes. Then, I began to get headaches that would result in me blacking out - a serious problem for a pilot, as you can imagine. Due to this, I was sent back to Britain as an invalid on probation. Despite my leave, I was promoted to Flying Officer simultaneously, an honorary and appreciative gesture.
