Washington was the son of Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. His father died when he was 11 years old, but he was close to his mother through-out his adult life. He was the great-grandson of Augustine Warner Jr. He is also related to Queen Elizabeth II, who is most likely his closest living relative today.
In 1750, Washington was noticed by Robert Dinwiddie, the lieutenant governor of the colony of Virginia. He later served under him in the Virginia militia.
Washington was a regular attender of the church of William White in Philadelphia for approximately 25 years. However, he was never once seen to take communion, which many insist was evidence of his atheism.
Washington met Louis Philippe I around 1795, when the future French king was exiled from his nation and visiting the United States.
