The land was originally a Greek colony, begun around the 6th Century BC, though many historians have produced evidence that the bay was used and inhabited since much earlier, by the Estruscans. Just before the 12th Century, the city became the Republic of Genoa, a powerful Italian city-state.
Today, it is known for its beauty, culture, waterfront and Meditteranean beaches, architecture, colorful buildings, warm climate, cuisine, arts, and business district.

Hermann Hesse: I traveled here in September of 1911 to board a German ship headed for India. I was accompanied by a friend of mine, a painter. This voyage was mainly being made to temporarily escape an increasingly strained marriage with my wife back home in Switzerland.
