Hermann Hesse: After marrying my wife Maria in 1904, and also having recently become a successful writer, we moved here to settle down and begin a family. I published my second novel, Beneath the Wheel, in 1906, and also continued writing poetry. My next novel, Gertrude, was not published until 1910, but I regarded it as my worst work. I developed new ideas of the blending of philosophy and religion - particularly Buddhism - called theosophy. I began to grow apart from Maria, and in 1911 left her here to embark on a long trip in the east. When I returned in 1912, we decided to move our family to Bern.
