The town was founded in the early 17th Century and named in honor of William III of England. Originally, the name Fort William applied only to the fort built here, and the town that grew around it was called Maryburgh in honor of William III's wife, Mary II of England. The town grew in population and influence during the English Civil War.
Today, Fort William is known for its rich landscape of mountains, lakes, and highlands, as well as for its local castle, fort, hiking and mountain biking trails, railway train line, history, and rugged beauty.
